BIOTRONIK INTRODUCES FIRST MRI-SAFE IMPLANTABLE CARDIAC DEVICE

The German company Biotronik has designed an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) and cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator (CRT-D) that has been approved for MRI use. The Inventra ProMRI cardiac devices utilize MRI-safe Sentus quadripolar left-ventricular leads which have improved shock delivery targeting capability.

The advantages of the new devices offer patients with heart failure CRT-D and high-tech leads that are MRI-compatible. This allows doctors to perform MRI scans without risk of interfering with the devices programming. This new technology will be especially critical for patients of older age, that over time develop comorbidities like stroke, cancer or other serious conditions.

New technology

The new Biotronik Inventra cardiac devices include MorphMatch technology that uses a morphology discrimination  algorithm to maximize specificity of tachyarrhythmia detection. MorphMatch optimizes the delivery of shocks and minimizes the amount of shocks given to prolong the life of the patient and the device.

The new Closed Loop Stimulation (CLS) breakthrough technology uses an algorithm to automatically adjust heart rate by measuring intracardiac impedance that is affected by individuals’ automatic nervous system. This means that ICDs will now be able to respond to natural changes during mental or physical stress.
